Here at last is our long- trailed collection of tasting notes on the vast twin wine regions of Languedoc and Roussillon. Although it includes notes on almost 400 different wines, it is just a snapshot of some of the more interesting wines to have come our way from this enormous and beautiful area.

MAS DE L’ECRITURE

Mas de L’Ecriture, Emotion Occitane 2005 Coteaux du Languedoc Rouge 16.5 Drink 2009-15 A fabulous, humorous label – colourful little sketches of bugs (or aliens?). Good to see a Languedoc label that is not trying too hard to be serious. 40% Syrah, 30% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, 15% Carignan A bright, cherry- red colour and a bright, cherry- red nose; quite floral in fact, red apple and redcurrant. Remarkably serious underneath the jaunty exterior. Stunningly bold acidity and tannin, like black brushstrokes over a glowing red canvas. Chili pepper, cayenne and burstingly- sweet, ripe tomato. Vibrant. Incisive. Unmistakeably no- compromise tannins. Cheeky, sharp and tangy. 13% (TC)

Mas de l’Ecriture, Les Pensées 2004 Coteaux du Languedoc Rouge 16.5 Drink 2006-09 50% Grenache, 20% Cinsault, 15% Syrah, 15% Carignan Mid crimson. Very fruity and charming and easy to love. You could drink this soft charmer without food. But the finish is dry, appetising and the palate has plenty of juice. 13.5%

Mas de l’Ecriture, L’Écriture 2004 Coteaux du Languedoc Rouge 16.5 Drink 2008-11 60% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre grown around Jonquières. Well- melded, quite complex bouquet with a hint of Syrah leather on the finish. Very concentrated. Dry and appetising. Certainly ready. 13.5%
